Recycling Yard Waste

Based on a current study more than 200 million tons of yard waste is placed in our solid waste landfills each year in NC. I looked into a way that I can use my yard waste (grass clippings), so what I have done is purchased 3 - 96 gallon trash cans and I use it as a compost bin. I use this in the fall and spring to place material around my trees and in flower beds.

Michael Field, Consumer & Wholesale Sales

Organic Foods

I had a food revelation at the grocery store the other night. Typically my family eats vegetables straight from the can for dinner, and from time to time I make that extra drive on my home to get fresh veggies as an alternative. My local grocery store had just added a large section of organic vegetables and I wondered to myself what the big deal was. I researched the difference between “organic” and the “fresh” vegetables I’ve been purchasing. Basically the fresh vegetables have been sprayed with pesticides in the growing stages (which means my family is consuming those chemicals as well) not to mention the long distances traveled to get to my supermarket. I would opt to purchase the organic vegetables but I’m not sure my pocket book could keep up with the prices so I came to the conclusion to grow my own backyard organic garden.

Now my next steps are to research on soils and which vegetables to plant in particular seasons. I think this can be a great way to bring my family closer, eat better, as well as help contribute back to the environment.

Deidra Grier, Manager of Creative & Consumer Services
